2006 National Championships
The closing day of the 2006 National Athletics titles, the most exciting meet of this past season, featured the final of the Men's
200 metres and 800 metres, and the Women's High Jump, Hammer Throw and 3000m Steeplechase. 2005 Australian Schools Champion and Hills' athlete
Ashley McBurney finished in 11th position in the Open Women's Triple Jump, but narrowly missed jumping over 12 metres.
Queensland's Linda Allen, Jeanette Bowles from Victoria, and NSW Champion Lisa Morrison finished in first, second and third place
respectively. Congratulations to all athletes who took part and competed.
FEBRUARY 4 2006 ..............................................
2006 National Championships
The third day of the 2006 National Championships will be remembered for Tamsyn Lewis' unexpected appearance in the heats of the Women's 800 metres,
John Steffenson's 45.14 Commonwealth A-Standard Qualifying time to win the Men's 400 metres and the furious pace set in the heats of the Men's 800 metres.
However, the highlight of the evening came with 15 year-old Vicky Parnov's 4.35m clearance to post a Commonwealth Games A-Standard Qualifying performance,
finishing behind the experienced Tatiana Grigorieva, who leapt 4.45m to take the Gold.
15 year-old Olivia Tauro shone in the heats of the Women's Open 200m this afternoon, posting the quickest qualifying time to
enter the semi-final draw (24.20, -2.1m/s). Olivia went on to secure fourth place in her semifinal, narrowly missing the final by
0.08s, an impressive end to what has been a highly successful first season at Open level. Not so lucky however, for Hills' Preya Carey,
having to withdrew from this event following a slight hip strain.
After two draining days of competition, Joanne Waring won Hills' only medal of the National meet in the
Women's U23 Heptathlon, accumulating 4413 points for a bronze medal. Congratulations Jo!
FEBRUARY 3 2006 ..............................................
2006 National Championships
Preya Carey claimed her semi-final of the Women's Open 100 metres on the second night of the Commonwealth Selection Trials, with an easy
11.88 (-1.6m/s), then followed up 90 minutes later with a fifth place finish in the final, behind 2005 National Champion Sally McLellan,
World Youth athlete Crystal Attenborough, QAS' Melanie Kleeberg and 1998 Commonwealth Games Representative Tania Van Heer-Murphy.
Other Hills athletes to take to the track on the second day of competition included Jessica Fisher and Joanne Waring in the opening
day of the Women's heptathlon, and Michael Barber and Darrel Muzyczka on the concluding day of the Men's Decathlon, with a sixth place
finish in the U23 and Open Divisions respectively.
The talking point of the night however was Jana Pittman's defeat in the Women's 400m final (53.52),
deservingly won by New Zealand's Jane Arnott. Jana finished in last place with a time more than three seconds outside her personal best time.
FEBRUARY 2 2006 ..............................................
2006 National Championships
Jana Pittman stole the thunder on a star-studded opening night of the 2006 National Titles, also doubling as the Commonwealth Games
Selection Trials. Following her debut run last weekend in Canberra, Jana was the fastest qualifier over the flat 400, stopping the clock in 52.84,
0.57 ahead of her next fastest competitor. With selectors providing her with an automatic Games spot in the 400m hurdles, Jana intends to focus solely
on attaining a Commonwealth qualifying time over the flat 400 in these Championships, however with Tamsyn Lewis, Jaimee-Lee Hoebergen, Annabelle Smith and
Rosemary Hayward snapping at her heels, claiming victory will prove a daunting endeavour. Yet to record a qualifying performance for the 400,
Pittman earlier this week remarked that she hopes to emulate her mentor Debbie Flintoff-King by bagging double Commonwealth Gold over both the flat 400
and 400 hurdles next month in Melbourne. Tomorrow night's final will be one of Jana's final opportunities to run beneath the Games minimum B-Entry Standard.
Fellow Hills' athlete Preya Carey had a somewhat more relaxing beginning to the Championships, clocking a steady 11.92 (-1.9m/s) in the
heats of the women's 100 metres to qualify second fastest for tomorrow night's final. Talented youngster Olivia Tauro had a disappointing
showing in her heat of the 100, missing the final and finishing 19th in the overall classification with a 12.37 into a blustery 3.4m/s headwind.
